Developing Beautiful Buildings to match the Town of Parry Sound

Posted on Thursday November 23, 2017

The Town of Parry Sound is growth ready with more money being invested in new developments.  Distler Construction Ltd builds custom homes, cottages, multi-residential and commercial properties (they recently finished the new medical building in the Town of Parry Sound).  We asked Alex Distler, Co-Owner of Distler Construction Ltd, to share the secret of the company’s success in Parry Sound.

Meeting Demand with Parry Sound Condos

After graduating from the University of Waterloo, Alex moved back to the Parry Sound in 2006 and joined the family business full-time.  Alex noticed family friends started moving away from Parry Sound, because they couldn't find low maintenance and accessible homes that better suited their lifestyles.  In 2008, Distler Construction Ltd bought a property in town in order to build multi-residential condos; a total of 96 units were planned.

Construction of the first of four phases started in 2010 and the project was completed in 2014. Before Distler Construction Ltd had even finished the building, all the condos were sold (except a few).  Alex emphasized the continuing demand in the area, and Distler Construction are frequently asked when they are building more condos.

Alex attributes the popularity of the Town of Parry Sound condos to the location, stating that customers are drawn to the natural beauty of the area and the relaxed lifestyle.  Moreover, Parry Sound offers a relatively affordable lifestyle for families and retirees.  Alex gives the example of how, a one bedroom condo – with a den, underground parking, and elevator access – can start at around $220k. A custom built home walking distance to the beach and boat ramps would start around $450k.

What’s construction like in the Town of Parry Sound?

Distler Construction Ltd finds most of what they need from local suppliers and sub-trades.  "We have great relationships with local suppliers and sub-trades that are reliable and go the extra mile when we need them to.  Whenever we need building materials or skilled trades, we source as much locally as we can and it's not often that we need to go outside of Parry Sound to find what we need.  When we do need to need to hire a trade from outside of Parry Sound, it's not hard to find them in Barrie or Orillia which are only an hour away."

And while some work in the Georgian Bay region is seasonal, Alex says that they've stayed busy year round ever since he's joined the family business full-time.  To Alex, who grew up in Parry Sound, he loves working outdoors right on the water – just like he did with his dad when he was younger.  And specializing in custom buildings means that each project he works on is unique, and no two Parry Sound homes or cottages are ever the same.
