Councillor Brad HorneIt has been my pleasure to have had the opportunity to serve you as a member of Town Council over the last 4 years. As someone who was born and raised in Parry Sound I was confident there were key areas where I had both the knowledge and passion to make a difference. I served this past term on the Parry Sound District Social Services Administration Board, the Parry Sound Industrial Park Board, the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame Committee, Youth Action Committee and a variety of ad hoc committees on Town Council. I learned the ropes of how to get things done in council, how to respond to both short and long term town requirements, and enjoyed every moment of my time on council. I look forward to serving the next four years on the Parry Sound Area Chamber of Commerce Board, Parry Sound Area Planning Board plus the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame Committee.

My passion for community service however extends beyond this role with the town. For the last 25 years I have served as a Director at Community Living Parry Sound, I have worked with many of you and your families in this capacity. For 8 years I was a volunteer firefighter for the Municipality of McDougall, I am active member of the Parry Sound Curling Club and the Parry Sound Golf and Country Club where I was on the Board of Directors for 6 years and President for 2 years. I am also a member of the Granite Masonic Lodge and Waubuno Shrine Club.

During the last 4 years I have been particularly proud of a few areas in my role as a member of the team at Town Council:

  • I strongly supported the Parry Sound Power and Lakeland Power Merger; maintaining jobs, acquiring needed capital investment and ensuring an ongoing revenue stream over the next years, these were key wins for all of us.
  • I led a broadly supported implementation of a non smoking policy at all Town of Parry Sound facilities, including all outdoor parks and recreation facilities, removing the risks of second hand smoke and the expenses required for cleanup in these sites for all citizens of Parry Sound.
  • I am particularly proud of the 0% municipal tax rate increase in 2014 that I helped implement, the first time in several years we have been able to achieve this.

Going forward (based in large part on your feedback which is plentiful and always welcome) I plan on spending my time in the following areas:

  • Implementing a plan for thoughtful waterfront development particularly looking to redevelop the brown fields on Parry Sound Road, opening up a set of discussions with Imperial Oil, landowners and the Ministry of the Environment is a key first step here.
  • Continuing to improve the Town's position on being more business and development friendly with improvements in infrastructure including a smart community with high-speed access being a priority.
  • Building on our history as tourist destination and now highlighting our position within the 30,000 Islands and the Georgian Bay Biosphere, with the new and improved 400 highway, and with our many festivals and attractions.

Thank you again for your vote of confidence last term. I am looking forward to serving for you again during the next 4 years.
