Sewer Flushing and Cleaning Begins August 31

Posted on Thursday August 27, 2020

Over the next few weeks, Municipal Sewer Services will be flushing and cleaning the Town of Parry Sound's sanitary sewers. The work will not affect most homeowners or cause any disruption to service. However, there is a possibility that small spills, noise and odours may result. The sewer cleaning process uses a high-pressure jet to scour the pipes and when it passes by a home's connection to the sewer, it creates a pressure wave. This wave has the ability to push out or pull in the water and air held inside plumbing and traps, including toilets, showers, sinks, and floor drains. This usually only occurs in homes that have sewer lateral deficiencies and/or inadequate ventilation.

As a precaution, or if your house has been affected by this type of work before, we advise you to keep toilet lids closed during times when they are not being used and flush after every use and place old towels or rubber mats over basement floor drains.

To prevent odours, consider pouring two litres of water into infrequently used plumbing fixtures to ensure the trap is full, ideally before and after the work takes place. If water appears to be spilled around your toilet or floor drains, please accept our apologies. Water spilled is a result of water stored in the trap and can be cleaned up with paper towel. Every effort will be made to minimize any inconveniences during this process. Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.

If you have any questions, please contact the Town Office at 705-746-2101.
