This past Fall the Town of Parry Sound hosted Viking Cruise line in Town and the surrounding area as they looked around the Great Lakes for ports of call. They were looking around all five Great Lakes at all available ports for one of two new expedition class ships launching in 2022. The first ship the Octantis will launch in January 2022 and will cruise the Great Lakes that summer.  Parry Sound had the offerings they were looking for and Octantis has booked to call into port in Parry Sound for seven visits in 2022.

The Octantis is significantly larger than the ships we have received to date, at a length of 665 feet it is the first ship scheduled to utilize tendering, which means the ship will be anchored in the harbour and passengers will be brought into the pier on smaller boats.  The ship will carry 378 passengers and 260 crew, it will stand 6 decks high and will have many amenities on board including three pools, a spa and a fitness center. Although this ship will be larger, the same as the ships coming into port now, the intention of this level of cruising remains that the ports of call are the attractions and not the ships themselves and passengers will have many excursion options available while in port and will be out exploring in our community.

Something unique to Viking is their commitment to science.  They will have a team of scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on board the Octantis conducting environmental research studying changes in the regions weather, climate and ecosystems. They have also engaged with the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve (GBBR) and are working on integrating the GBBR into the excursions to have learning opportunities for their passengers.

On January 15, Viking hosted an event at the historic Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel in California to announce the new ship routes and launch the new expedition class level of cruising. Their Great Lakes routes (including stops at Parry Sound) were prominently featured at the keynote presentation by Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking.  Hopefully, this is just the beginning for Viking Cruising in Parry Sound as they have strategic plans to expand their offerings in the Great Lakes for years to come.
