Councillor Paul Borneman

Picture of 2018-2022 Mayor and Council

Portrait of Paul BornemanI am a proud life-long Parry Sounder. Along with my wife Elsa, we've lived, worked and raised our family here. This is our home. Through the years I have been involved in organizing, coaching and participating in various sporting events and activities. I continue to support various local initiatives such as Harvest Share.

It has been my honour to serve on Council since 1997. In that time there have been numerous positive changes in our community which I am proud to have played a part in delivering.

After 17 years of on the job training, I have served on a wide variety of boards and committees and have a broad range of experience, appreciation and understanding regarding the many issues that face our community. In fulfilling my duties on Council, I have always kept an open mind, treat people fairly and with respect and look for the best possible solution for the community as a whole. I am a team player who looks to build consensus. I believe that honesty, transparency and trust are keys for every level of government dealing with its neighbours, partners and constituents. I take the responsibility of serving on Council seriously and will continue to work to the best of my ability to ensure the people of Parry Sound get the best return on their investment.

During the previous term of Council:

I am proud to have led the merger between Parry Sound Hydro Corp and Lakeland Power which results in the Town of Parry Sound retaining a local ownership stake while at the same time enhancing both our immediate and long term financial picture while allowing for the re-capitalization of the company at no risk to the taxpayer. In addition, the merger will result in the re-build of the electric generation station at Cascade St. in the near future;

I am very happy to have contributed along with our municipal partners and senior levels of government to the upgrades and expansion at both the Parry Sound Area Municipal Airport and the Parry Sound Area Industrial Park. These improvements have allowed for the creation of a number of new jobs in the area;

Minding the Town's finances and staffing is Council's top priority. I am extremely pleased with the results of the turnover in Corporation's Senior Leadership Team in recent years. Further, during the past four years careful planning and management of the Town's finances have resulted in a reduction in the Town's debt and continued investment in our infrastructure.

Moving forward:

Fiscal responsibility, strategic reinvestment in our infra-structure, re-development of the Town's waterfront, and, making the community more investment ready allowing, for the creation of additional jobs and fostering a range of housing opportunities while at the same time being environmentally responsible and user friendly need to be among Council's top priorities.
