Hillcrest Cemetery

June 8, 2021

Interments are now being scheduled in accordance with the regulations of the Provincial Government and the Bereavement Authority of Ontario. Please contact the cemetery administrator to make arrangements for a date and time.

The Town of Parry Sound is required to follow the Directive from the Bereavement Authority of Ontario dated June 8, 2021

The Directive is effective June 11, 2021, please follow the link above for the complete directive. The information below is a synopsis of the directive on the items which apply directly to cemeteries.

Funerals and interments taking place within a cemetery with a funeral home in attendance will be subject to the following:

  1. Outdoors - Two metres physical distancing to a maximum of 50 attendees, funeral & cemetery staff do not count in the maximum but the following staffing ratios apply.
  2. One staff member for every 10 attendees to a maximum requirement of four staff members for 50 attendees.
  3. All attendees to be screened and logged by the funeral home
  4. All attendees to wear masks or face coverings and maintain 2 metres (6 feet) physical distancing

Cremation interments taking place without funeral home involvement (family only) will be subject to the following:

  1. Maximum 30 attendees. As we only have 3 staff at the cemetery and are held to a ratio of 1 staff to 10 attendees we can only accommodate maximum 30 attendees at this time, subject to staff availability. 
  2. all attendees to wear masks or face coverings and maintain 2 metres (6 feet) physical distancing, except for members of the same household who live together.
  3. the family member making the arrangement for the interment will be required to complete the Cemetery Use - COVID-19 Safety Measures document, one of the requirements of which makes them responsible for ensuring they have contact information for all attendees in the event the Health Unit requires it.

BAO Inspectors will be monitoring funeral establishments and cemeteries to ensure compliance.

Cemetery staff will NOT interact with persons at the grave site and within the cemetery. All inquiries to be directed to the cemetery administrator at the office.

All those accessing the cemeteries during this time MUST practice physical distancing, wear a mask or face covering  and follow proper health and safety advice.  Any inquiries should be directed to the cemetery administrator at the municipal office.

The Town of Parry Sound owns and operates 2 municipal cemeteries

The cemeteries are licensed by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO) which is an administrative body operating under the authority of  the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services (MGCS), under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (FBCSA)

Hillcrest Cemetery

Hillcrest Cemetery established in 1871 is located on William Street and is bordered by Hillcrest Avenue and Isabella Street. Staff are in the cemetery Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 4:00, during the spring, summer, and fall. You may find staff in the office at the rear of the chapel or working on the grounds.

Sylvan Acres Cemetery

Sylvan Acres Cemetery established in 1971 is located on Hurdville Road, McDougall, ON. To get there take Hwy 124 about 15 minutes northeast of Parry Sound to Hurdville Road; follow to the cemetery which is on the right.

Staff are only at Sylvan Acres to do grounds work or interments.

Information on Interments, Monuments, Columbaria, Lot Decorations, and Interment Rights Purchase is available from the cemetery administrative assistant who would be pleased to speak with you to answer any questions you may have or to explain the details of the cemetery by-law.

Within the by-law is a separate price schedule. Pricing changes each January 1st by the October CPI (Consumer Price Index). Terms are governed by the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002.
