Crossing Guards
School Crossing Guards provide an important service to the community by being responsible for the safe passage of children and the public at assigned areas before and after school. A school crossing guard is regulated by the Highway Traffic Act section 176.1. Using their STOP sign, they temporality stop traffic to allow pedestrians to cross safely. Under the Highway Traffic Act, a crossing guard's stop sign has the same legal authority as a stop sign at an intersection. You could face a minimum $150 fine and three demerit points for not stopping.
The school crossing guard locations are based on several factors: number of children crossing, gaps in traffic flow, traffic warrant studies and surrounding conditions.
There are 2 assigned school crossing guard areas in Parry Sound:
- Intersection of Beatty and Isabella street; and
- Intersection of Silver Birch Court and William Street.
What should you do when approaching a school crossing guard area?
- Stop when the crossing guard has the stop sign in an upright position.
- Stop when the guard is entering the roadway.
- Remain stopped until the children and the crossing guard have safely cleared the roadway.
